Samsung Electronics, the world’s leading television manufacturer, has appointed a new head of its TV business in a significant leadership change as the company faces increasing pressure from Chinese competitors both domestically and internationally.
The South Korean tech giant confirmed in a statement on Monday that Lee Won-jin, formerly the head of its Global Marketing Office, has been named the new head of its Visual Display Business. He replaces Yong Seok-woo, who will now serve as an adviser within the company.
The leadership change comes at an unusual time, as Samsung typically conducts its annual management reshuffle around December. The company did not provide a specific reason for the replacement.
According to a Samsung Electronics official, the appointment is intended to bring a “fresh perspective” and introduce necessary changes to the TV division, which is currently navigating a highly competitive and rapidly evolving global market.
Samsung’s TV business is facing intensified pressure from Chinese and Japanese rivals. Earlier in March, TCL Electronics of China and Sony of Japan entered into binding agreements for a strategic partnership in the home entertainment sector, a move that is expected to further strengthen competition in the industry.
In addition, reports had previously indicated that Samsung was considering stopping the sale of home appliances and televisions in China within the year, as local Chinese brands continue to gain market share by offering lower-priced alternatives.
The company has also been dealing with financial challenges in its TV segment. Samsung reported last month that profits from its TV division declined in the first quarter due to weaker consumer demand and rising raw material costs, further highlighting the difficulties in the market.
The newly appointed head, Lee Won-jin, brings a background in global marketing and previously worked at Google before joining Samsung in 2014. His experience is expected to play a key role in reshaping Samsung’s strategy in the highly competitive visual display industry.
