A cargo vessel traveling near the Strait of Hormuz reported coming under attack Sunday by multiple small boats, according to a statement from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center, a British military-linked monitoring body that tracks maritime security in the region.
The vessel, which was moving north near the coastal area of Sirik, Iran, reported the incident to authorities. Officials said all crew members were unharmed following the encounter. No group has claimed responsibility for the reported assault.
The incident adds to a growing number of security events affecting one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors. At least two dozen similar attacks have been recorded in and around the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Iranian authorities have previously stated they maintain operational control over the waterway and have indicated that vessels not affiliated with the United States or Israel may pass through the strait if certain conditions are met, including the payment of tolls.
The latest report is the first publicly disclosed incident in the area since April 22, when another commercial vessel reported being fired upon in nearby waters, according to accounts cited by the Associated Press.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a strategic chokepoint for global energy shipments, and repeated security incidents have raised concerns among shipping operators and international observers about the safety of maritime transit through the region.
