President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the nomination of Nicole Saphier to serve as the next U.S. Surgeon General, while also issuing sharp criticism of Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) for opposing a previous nominee.

In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump said, “I am pleased to announce that I am nominating Dr. Nicole B. Saphier to be the next SURGEON GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”

He described Saphier as “a STAR physician” who has worked extensively with patients facing breast cancer and other serious illnesses, adding that she has focused on early detection and prevention efforts. Trump also highlighted her communication skills, stating she “makes complicated health issues more easily understood by all Americans.”

The nomination follows an earlier selection that did not advance. In a separate post, Trump criticized Cassidy for blocking the nomination of Casey Means, whom he said had been recommended by Robert F. Kennedy Jr..

“For months, Senator Bill Cassidy… has stood in the way of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Nominee, Casey Means, for the important position of U.S. Surgeon General,” Trump wrote, adding that the senator’s actions reflected “political games.”

Trump said Means would continue working on health-related issues, including childhood disease, autism rates, nutrition, and fertility research, despite not advancing to the role.

In an additional post, Trump called on Republican voters in Louisiana to oppose Cassidy in an upcoming primary, stating, “Hopefully all of the Great Republican People of Louisiana… will be voting Bill Cassidy OUT OF OFFICE.”

The Surgeon General nomination requires Senate confirmation. No timeline has been announced for hearings or a vote on Saphier’s nomination.
