Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, issued a forceful statement marking Persian Gulf Day, signaling continued defiance toward the United States and reaffirming Iran’s commitment to its military and nuclear capabilities.
In a message published online in a Persian Gulf Day statement, Khamenei emphasized that Iran would continue to safeguard what he described as its “nuclear and missile capabilities,” even as tensions persist with the United States over regional security and control of key waterways.
Khamenei’s remarks included direct criticism of the U.S. military presence in the region. He said the only place for American forces in the Persian Gulf was “at the bottom of its waters,” according to a translation of the statement.
A fuller translation shared through Mehr News included several statements outlining Iran’s position. “By God’s help and power, the bright future of the Persian Gulf region will be a future without America, one serving the progress, comfort and prosperity of its people,” the message read.
Khamenei also framed the United States as an external actor with no legitimate role in the region. “We and our neighbors across the waters of the Persian Gulf and the (Gulf) of Oman share a common destiny. Foreigners who come from thousands of kilometers away to act with greed and malice there have no place in it – except at the bottom of its waters,” the statement said.
The remarks come amid continued tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, and ongoing confrontation between Iran and the United States.
Khamenei described recent events as marking a turning point in the region. “Two months after the world’s biggest military campaign and aggression in the region and America’s shameful failure in its plan, a new chapter is dawning in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement read.
He also underscored Iran’s intent to maintain and defend its technological and military capabilities. “Ninety million brave and honorable Iranian compatriots … consider all the capacities of identity, spirituality, humanity, science, industry and basic and new technologies — from nano and bio to nuclear and missile — as their national capital and will guard them like water, land and air borders,” the statement said.
Khamenei further asserted that Iran would play a central role in securing regional waterways. “With practical gratitude for the blessing of implementing management of the Strait of Hormuz, Islamic Iran will secure the Persian Gulf region and eliminate the hostile enemy’s abuses of this waterway,” the statement said.
The comments come as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain stalled, with both sides maintaining firm positions on issues including nuclear development and regional security.
