The Senate has confirmed Robert Cekada as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, approving his nomination Wednesday in a 59-39 vote.

Cekada, who had been serving in an acting capacity, received backing from all Republican senators along with six Democrats and independent Sen. Angus King, who caucuses with Democrats.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives operates under the Justice Department and is responsible for enforcing federal laws related to firearms, explosives, arson, and illegal trafficking activity, as outlined in its organizational mandate.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche welcomed the confirmation in a statement shared on X, writing, “Congratulations to Rob Cekada on his confirmation today as the next Director of ATF. Rob is an outstanding leader who has served as the Deputy Director of ATF over the last year, and is an integral part of our team. I look forward to our continued work together to make America safe.”

Cekada’s confirmation formalizes his leadership of the agency after a period serving in its top role on an interim basis.
