The attempted shooting occurred over the weekend near the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton, where President Trump, members of his administration, journalists, and public officials had gathered for the high-profile annual event.
Speaking solemnly before lawmakers, King Charles opened his remarks by acknowledging the broader global climate of instability. “Ladies and gentlemen, we meet in times of great uncertainty,” he said, referencing ongoing geopolitical tensions stretching from Europe to the Middle East. He noted that conflicts abroad are reverberating domestically within allied nations, affecting communities “the length and breadth of our own countries.”
Turning directly to the weekend’s violence, the King addressed the attack that unfolded just blocks from the Capitol. “We meet, too, in the aftermath of the incident not far from this great building, that sought to harm the leadership of your nation, and to foment wider fear and discord,” he stated. His remarks were met with bipartisan attention in the chamber.
“With unshakable resolve,” King Charles declared, “such acts of violence will never succeed.” His condemnation underscored the United Kingdom’s solidarity with the United States at a moment of heightened security concerns.
According to federal authorities, the Department of Justice has charged 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen in connection with the shooting. Prosecutors allege that Allen opened fire at the Washington Hilton during the dinner and attempted to breach the ballroom where the president and senior officials were gathered.
Investigators further claim that Allen forced his way through a security magnetometer while armed, in what authorities described as an effort to reach the secured event space. Court filings also indicate that the suspect was found in possession of a manifesto outlining his alleged intent to target officials within the Trump administration.
The assassination attempt marks the latest in a series of serious security threats against President Trump in recent years, raising renewed concerns about political violence in the United States.
