President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump formally welcomed King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the White House on Monday afternoon, marking the beginning of a high-profile state visit designed to reinforce the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom.
The president and first lady greeted the royal couple on the South Lawn, where they exchanged warm handshakes and posed for photographs before proceeding inside the Executive Mansion. The ceremonial welcome reflected the deep diplomatic and cultural ties between the two nations, with both sides emphasizing cooperation and shared history.
Tea on the State Floor and a Unique White House Tour
Upon entering the White House, officials confirmed that the couples would gather for tea on the State Floor, offering a more intimate setting for conversation before the formal engagements ahead. Following tea, President Trump and the first lady escorted King Charles and Queen Camilla on a tour of one of the White House’s newest additions — the expanded beehive located on the South Lawn near the White House kitchen.
The beehive, recently unveiled as part of the first lady’s initiative promoting sustainability and environmental awareness, has become a point of pride for the administration. The tour highlighted the White House’s efforts toward conservation and locally sourced food production, themes that align with King Charles’ long-standing advocacy for environmental stewardship.
After the beehive visit, the king and queen were scheduled to depart the White House for the remainder of the day’s engagements.
Ceremonial Arrival at Joint Base Andrews
Earlier Monday, the royal couple touched down at Joint Base Andrews, where they were welcomed with full military honors. A U.S. Air Force ceremonial band performed the national anthems of both countries, and a military honor guard stood in formation as the king and queen were formally received before traveling by motorcade to Washington, D.C.
The ceremonial reception underscored the significance of the visit, which includes several high-level diplomatic and symbolic events over the coming days.
State Banquet and Congressional Address
The highlight of the visit is expected to be the official state banquet at the White House — traditionally the pinnacle event of any state visit. During the banquet, President Trump and King Charles are expected to exchange formal toasts and speeches, similar to their remarks delivered last year at Windsor Castle during the Trumps’ visit to the United Kingdom.

In addition to White House events, King Charles has reportedly been invited to address a joint session of Congress — an honor previously extended to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her 1991 visit to Washington.
The king is also expected to travel to New York City later in the week to participate in a September 11 memorial event, where he is scheduled to meet with Zohran Mamdani in a gesture of solidarity and remembrance.
Visit Proceeds After Security Scare
The state visit comes amid heightened security concerns following what officials described as an apparent assassination attempt targeting President Trump and senior members of his executive team just hours before the royal arrival. Security services from both the United States and the United Kingdom reportedly held last-minute coordination meetings to ensure the visit could proceed safely.

Despite the incident, King Charles chose not to cancel the trip — a decision President Trump publicly praised, calling the monarch “brave” for moving forward with the visit under tense circumstances.
Strengthening Transatlantic Ties
The visit follows President and Mrs. Trump’s trip to Windsor Castle in September, reinforcing what both governments describe as a renewed commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two allies.

As the week unfolds, the series of ceremonial engagements, policy discussions, and symbolic gestures are expected to highlight not only the historic bond between the United States and the United Kingdom but also the personal rapport between their leaders during a pivotal moment on the global stage.
