Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has unveiled an aggressive pricing strategy alongside the release of its latest model, aiming to rapidly expand its footprint in the highly competitive global AI market.
The company announced it will offer developers a steep 75% discount on its newly introduced DeepSeek-V4-Pro model through May 5, positioning the move as a limited-time incentive to drive early adoption. In addition, DeepSeek said it is reducing costs across its broader API ecosystem, cutting prices for input cache hits to just one-tenth of their previous levels. The changes were disclosed in a statement shared via social media platform X.
The pricing overhaul comes as DeepSeek rolls out a preview of its long-anticipated V4 model family, which has been engineered to run on hardware developed by Huawei. The adaptation underscores a broader effort within China’s tech sector to reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor technologies while maintaining competitive performance in advanced computing applications.
The V4 lineup includes two distinct versions tailored to different use cases. The flagship Pro variant is designed for high-performance applications and carries a higher price point outside the promotional window, while the Flash version offers a more lightweight and cost-efficient alternative for developers with less demanding workloads.
According to the company, DeepSeek-V4-Pro demonstrates strong performance in world-knowledge benchmarks, surpassing many open-source competitors. It is reported to rank just behind Google’s closed-source Gemini-Pro-3.1 model in certain evaluations, a notable claim that places DeepSeek among a growing group of firms challenging established leaders in the AI space.
DeepSeek also emphasized the models’ suitability for powering AI agents—systems capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks beyond the scope of traditional chatbots. Such applications, which range from automated research and coding assistance to enterprise workflow management, typically demand significantly greater computational resources, making pricing a critical factor for adoption.
The company’s dual strategy of performance optimization and aggressive cost reduction reflects intensifying competition among AI developers globally, as firms race to attract users and establish ecosystems around their models. By lowering barriers to entry while touting near state-of-the-art capabilities, DeepSeek appears to be positioning itself as a serious contender in both domestic and international markets.
