White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Friday that U.S. officials are preparing for another round of talks with Iran, with envoys set to travel to Pakistan for in-person discussions.
Leavitt said Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will depart Saturday to participate in negotiations involving Iranian representatives. The talks are expected to be facilitated by Pakistani intermediaries.
“I can confirm special envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be off to Pakistan again tomorrow morning to engage in talks, direct talks inter mediated by the Pakistanis, who have been incredible friends and mediators throughout this entire process, with representatives from the Iranian delegation,” Leavitt said during an appearance on “America Reports.”
She said the meeting follows outreach from Iranian officials after President Donald Trump encouraged renewed engagement. “Look, the Iranians reached out as the president called on them to do and asked for this in-person conversation,” Leavitt said. “So the president is dispatching Steve and Jared to go hear what they have to say.”
Leavitt added that the administration views diplomacy as a priority in the ongoing situation. “The president always wants to give diplomacy a chance. It’s always his first option, and he is willing to do that here again,” she said, expressing hope that the discussions would be productive and contribute toward a potential agreement.
She also noted that senior officials in Washington will remain engaged during the talks. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and other members of the national security team are expected to monitor developments and remain prepared to travel if needed.
Leavitt said Witkoff and Kushner will report back to the president and his team following the meetings as discussions with Iranian representatives continue.
