In a rare morning game, the Calaveras High School baseball team looked to bounce back from a 7-2 road loss to the Bret Harte Bullfrogs less than 24 hours earlier.

With the Red Hawks still in the fight for third place in the Mother Lode League standings, another loss would make finishing anything higher than fourth place a much more difficult task.

In a makeup game against the Linden Lions, Calaveras fell behind early and, despite a three-run home run from junior Cohen Curran, the Red Hawks were unable to capture the victory. Calaveras lost to Linden 6-3 on April 18 in Linden.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, Linden scored once off Calaveras junior starting pitcher Jett Kesterson. Linden followed that with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to build a 6-0 lead.

Trailing by six, Calaveras had its most productive offensive inning in the top of the sixth. Senior Mason Powers walked, and freshman Austin Lock recorded his second single of the game to put two runners on for Curran. Curran cut the deficit in half on one pitch as the junior first baseman blasted a three-run home run to bring the score to 6-3.

Unfortunately for the Red Hawks, Curran’s blast was the only swing that produced runs the rest of the game, and Calaveras fell by three runs.

Calaveras finished the game with three runs on three hits, drew four walks and stole one base. Curran went 1 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, Lock went 2 for 2, scored one run, walked and stole one base, and the trio of senior Ryan Burns, sophomore Mason Wehling and Powers each walked once.

Kesterson took the loss on the mound, going four innings and allowing four runs on four hits with five walks and no strikeouts. Freshman Luke Souders chipped in with two innings of relief and gave up two unearned runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

With the loss, Calaveras falls to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in Mother Lode League play. The Red Hawks will return to the diamond Thursday to take on the Summerville Bears at 3:30 p.m. in Tuolumne. Calaveras will host Summerville on Friday at 4 p.m. at Matthew Bicocca Field in San Andreas. Summerville is currently in a three-way tie for first place with Linden and Bret Harte.
