The desecration of a crucifix by an Israeli soldier in the southern Lebanese village of Debel has drawn widespread condemnation from Israeli leaders, U.S. officials, and religious figures.

A photo that surfaced online over the weekend shows the soldier using the blunt side of an axe to smash a fallen sculpture of Jesus on the cross. The image was shared by Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi, who has previously documented Israeli military misconduct in Gaza.

The incident, which took place in a village with a significant Christian population, has prompted outrage from across the globe. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the act, describing it as contrary to the Jewish values of tolerance. He pledged that the soldier responsible would be punished.

“I was stunned and saddened to learn that an IDF soldier damaged a Catholic religious icon in southern Lebanon. I condemn the act in the strongest terms,” Netanyahu expressed via X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Fadi Falfel, a priest from Debel, described the incident as an “affront to the Christian faith,” and stressed the emotional harm caused to the local community. He explained that the cross was part of a small shrine located in a family’s garden at the edge of the village. “One of the Israeli soldiers broke the cross and did this horrible thing, this desecration of our holy symbols,” Falfel stated.

The Catholic Church also condemned the act. The Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land, which includes Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, called the desecration a “grave affront to the Christian faith,” adding that it exposed a disturbing lack of respect for sacred symbols and the dignity of others.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for “swift, severe, and public consequences” for the soldier. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the act “disgraceful and shameful” and issued an apology to the Christian community, acknowledging the hurt caused by the incident.

In response, the Israeli military launched an investigation into the matter, emphasizing that the soldier’s conduct was incompatible with the standards expected of IDF troops. They pledged to assist in restoring the statue to its rightful place.

Debel, located in southern Lebanon, is one of the villages under Israeli occupation, a result of the ongoing military campaign against Hezbollah, which began after Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in early March. Despite a recent ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S., tensions remain high, and many residents of Debel continue to live under difficult conditions, unable to access parts of the village or travel freely.

This incident has not only inflamed tensions in the region but also raised significant questions about the conduct of soldiers in conflict zones and the need for greater accountability in military operations.

The repercussions of this act of desecration are still unfolding as both local and international voices continue to demand justice.
