A weeklong public reading of the Bible began Saturday in Washington, D.C., bringing together religious leaders, elected officials and ministries for what organizers describe as the largest coordinated scripture reading event in the nation’s history.

The event, titled “America Reads the Bible,” opened at the Museum of the Bible, according to coverage by Fox News. Participants are scheduled to read the Bible in its entirety over seven days, with daily sessions running from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. through Friday.

Event organizers state that more than 475 national leaders and 115 ministries are participating in the 84-hour reading, which spans from Genesis through Revelation. Additional details provided by the museum can be found here, noting the event also coincides with the lead-up to the United States’ 250th anniversary.

During the opening ceremony, House Speaker Mike Johnson described the gathering as more than a symbolic gesture. “This is more than symbolism. It’s a rededication,” he said, emphasizing the historical role of faith in shaping the nation.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins also addressed the event, stating, “People talk about the importance of the Bible… it’s one of the best-selling books, but one of the least-read books. This is a great time to rediscover the Word of God.”

A promotional video shared by organizers, available here, drew parallels to biblical accounts of national renewal. The video states, “For generations, the biblical story of Nehemiah has echoed as a call to rebuild not just walls, but hearts… As scripture returned, revival followed.”

President Donald Trump is scheduled to participate in the readings on Tuesday evening, delivering a passage from 2 Chronicles 7:11–22 from the Oval Office, according to a social media announcement here. Organizers described the moment as significant, stating in the post, “This will be a defining spiritual moment in the life of our nation.”

The event continues throughout the week, with participants rotating through scheduled readings as part of the coordinated effort to complete the full text of the Bible.
