A new documentary film is bringing renewed attention to ongoing debates surrounding evolutionary theory, presenting arguments that some scientists and scholars say point to limitations in traditional explanations for the development of life.

The film, The Story of Everything, scheduled for theatrical release April 30, features Stephen Meyer, who has focused his work on questions related to biological origins and the structure of scientific explanations. Meyer, affiliated with the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture, argues that certain aspects of modern biology remain insufficiently explained by conventional evolutionary mechanisms.

“Many leading evolutionary biologists today are calling for a new theory of evolution, because they recognize that the mutation-natural selection mechanism has limited creative power,” Meyer says in the film.

The documentary presents a perspective that, while natural selection and genetic mutation account for observable variations within species—such as changes in finch beak size, moth coloration, or bacterial resistance—these mechanisms may not fully explain the emergence of entirely new biological structures or species-level complexity.

Meyer states that scientific developments over the past century have prompted some researchers to revisit foundational assumptions about how life originated and diversified. “The scientific discoveries of the last one hundred years and right up to the present are pointing in a very different direction than people thought in the late 19th century,” he says.

The film explores themes related to the structure of the universe, biological systems, and the interpretation of scientific data, presenting the argument that patterns observed in nature may indicate underlying order beyond traditional evolutionary explanations.

Charles Darwin first introduced the theory of evolution by natural selection in the 19th century, a framework that remains central to modern biology. While widely accepted within the scientific community, discussions continue in some academic and philosophical circles about how best to account for the origin of complex biological information and large-scale evolutionary changes.

The documentary positions itself within that ongoing discussion, offering one interpretation of recent scientific findings and inviting further examination of how life’s origins are understood.
