Donald Trump said U.S. forces seized an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel over the weekend after it allegedly attempted to bypass a naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz, marking a new escalation in maritime tensions involving Iran.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the ship was ordered to stop by a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer operating in the Gulf of Oman but did not comply. “Our Navy ship stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom,” he wrote.
Trump said U.S. Marines subsequently boarded and took custody of the vessel, identified as the Touska, and were inspecting its cargo. “We have custody of the ship and are seeing what’s on board!” he added.
The reported seizure comes amid heightened tensions surrounding maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. U.S. enforcement actions in the region have been part of broader efforts to maintain restrictions tied to ongoing disputes with Iran.
The development also coincides with preparations for another round of direct negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials, expected to take place in the coming days as a temporary ceasefire approaches expiration.
Officials have not released additional details about the vessel’s cargo or crew, and there has been no immediate public response from Iranian authorities regarding the incident.
The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts continue alongside military activity in the region.
