Two conservative members of the U.S. Supreme Court, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, are not planning to retire this year, according to multiple reports, easing immediate expectations of new vacancies on the high court.
Reporting from Fox News indicated that Alito, who was appointed by George W. Bush, is expected to continue serving through the upcoming term. The outlet cited sources who said the justice has already taken steps consistent with remaining on the bench, including staffing decisions tied to the next court session.
Separately, CBS News reported that Thomas also does not intend to step down this year, reinforcing indications that the court’s current composition is unlikely to change in the near term.
Discussion surrounding potential retirements intensified following remarks by Donald Trump during an interview with Maria Bartiromo. Trump said he is prepared to nominate additional justices if openings occur, stating, “It could be two, could be three, could be one. I don’t know — I’m prepared to do it, but when you mention Alito, he is a great justice.”
Coverage from Fox News further reported that Alito “is not stepping down this term and is in the process of hiring the rest of his clerks for the next term,” citing multiple sources familiar with the situation. The report also noted that justices often hire clerks years in advance, meaning such preparations do not necessarily determine long-term retirement timing.
Speculation about possible changes to the court has persisted in recent months, driven in part by the age and tenure of several justices and the political significance of Supreme Court appointments. Trump indicated he maintains a list of potential nominees but did not provide specific names during the interview.
The current developments suggest that, barring unexpected changes, the court’s membership will remain stable through at least the upcoming term, with both Alito and Thomas continuing their roles on the nation’s highest court.
