UANL Tigres secured a place in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup on Wednesday night, advancing on away goals despite suffering a 3-1 defeat to the Seattle Sounders in a dramatic second leg.
The result in Seattle capped a tense two-legged contest in which Tigres’ earlier 2-0 victory in Mexico ultimately proved decisive. With the aggregate score tied at 3-3, the Mexican side progressed due to the competition’s away-goals rule, a tiebreaker that rewarded their crucial strike on the road.
Seattle started with urgency, knowing they needed to overturn the deficit. Albert Rusnak set the tone early, opening the scoring in the 11th minute with a composed finish that energized the home crowd and cut into Tigres’ advantage. The Sounders continued to press forward, seeking to level the aggregate score before halftime.
Tigres, however, responded with a key away goal that shifted the dynamics of the tie. Joaquim Pereira found the net in the 31st minute, capitalizing on an opportunity to restore breathing room for the visitors. That goal proved pivotal, forcing Seattle to chase an even steeper margin in the second half.
The Sounders regained momentum shortly after the break when Danny Musovski scored in the 49th minute, bringing the aggregate score level once again and reigniting hopes of a comeback. As the match progressed, Seattle maintained attacking pressure, pushing Tigres deeper into their defensive shape.
Rusnak struck again in the 82nd minute to give Seattle a 3-1 lead on the night, but the goal ultimately fell short of changing the outcome. Despite winning the match, the Sounders were unable to overcome the away-goals disadvantage, and Tigres held on to advance.
The result highlights the fine margins in knockout football, where a single goal away from home can outweigh an otherwise strong performance. For Tigres, the progression keeps alive their pursuit of a second Champions Cup title and their first since 2020.
They now turn their attention to a semifinal clash against Nashville SC, who advanced after eliminating Club América in another notable result earlier in the competition.
In the other semifinal matchup set on Wednesday, Toluca FC delivered a dominant performance to book their place in the next round, defeating the LA Galaxy 3-0 to complete a commanding aggregate victory.
Portuguese forward João Dias Fernandes Paulinho was the standout performer, scoring twice in quick succession during the second half to put the tie beyond doubt. After a measured opening period, Toluca took control early through Jesús Gallardo, who broke the deadlock in the 10th minute with a well-taken goal.
Paulinho then took center stage after halftime, finding the net in the 58th and 64th minutes to seal the victory. His clinical finishing underscored Toluca’s attacking efficiency and highlighted his importance to the team’s recent success.
The Mexican club, which has enjoyed a strong domestic run with consecutive league titles, advanced to the Champions Cup semifinals for the sixth time. Their overall dominance in the tie was reflected in a 7-2 aggregate scoreline, leaving little doubt about their superiority over the two legs.
Paulinho’s performances have also drawn attention at the international level. The 33-year-old striker was recently called up to represent Portugal in upcoming friendly matches, further recognition of his form. Across the two legs against LA Galaxy, he scored five goals, playing a decisive role in his team’s progression.
Toluca will next face Los Angeles FC in what promises to be a highly competitive semifinal encounter between two attack-minded sides.
As the tournament moves into its final stages, the remaining teams reflect a balance between Mexican and Major League Soccer clubs, setting the stage for high-stakes matchups with regional pride and continental silverware on the line.
