The SAVE America Act Does Not Suppress Minority Votes

Democrats and their media allies have spent years peddling the myth that requiring photo ID and proof of citizenship at the polls is a thinly veiled plot to suppress minority voters. This claim is not only false but insulting to the millions of black, Hispanic, and other minority Americans who overwhelmingly support the very safeguards embedded in the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE America Act).

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) even claims passing it would be “federalizing Jim Crow.”

But the data shows minorities themselves don’t buy this elitist narrative.

A Pew Research Center survey found 83 percent of all Americans favor requiring government-issued photo ID to vote, with 95 percent of Republicans and 71 percent of Democrats in agreement. Considering only 56 percent of Democrats self-identify as white, that requires a large proportion of minority support.

Polling that breaks down support for voter ID along racial lines bears that out.

CNN polling analysis by Harry Enten revealed 76 percent of black Americans, 82 percent of Latinos, and 85 percent of white voters back photo ID requirements. A Cygnal poll from February showed 69 percent of Hispanics and 56 percent of black voters support voter ID for federal elections.

So, why are minority voters so out of touch with Democratic politicians despite most of them voting for those politicians?

It’s very simple. Despite supporting Democrats on other issues, most minorities support common sense voting laws that ensure only American citizens are allowed to vote in our elections.

Requiring voter ID is not burdensome, and minority Americans are not too dumb or too poor to acquire voter ID. Americans of every background already show photo ID to board planes, buy alcohol, open bank accounts, or pick up prescriptions. Claiming minorities cannot manage the same step at the polls treats them as second-class citizens.

The SAVE America Act simply applies this commonsense standard nationwide at voting booths during federal elections, while requiring documentary proof of citizenship-passport, birth certificate, or REAL ID-compliant document-during federal voter registration.

Opponents ignore these facts because the real “suppression” they fear is the suppression of illegal votes. Non-citizen voting dilutes the voice of every legal voter, including minorities who turn out at historic rates when elections feel fair. The SAVE America Act does not block any eligible citizen. It blocks fraud that undermines minority voters just as much as white voters. Polls prove minorities know this better than Democratic elites.
