Donald Trump faced widespread criticism after posting an AI-generated image of himself resembling a religious figure, a move that drew backlash even from some of his conservative supporters. The image, which appeared on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, was deleted the following day after it quickly sparked controversy online.
The post came during an intensifying public dispute between Trump and Pope Leo, who has openly criticized the war that began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran. Shortly before sharing the image, Trump had posted a lengthy message attacking the pope, describing him as weak on crime and ineffective in foreign policy.
Pope Leo responded firmly, stating that he had no fear of the Trump administration and would continue speaking out. During a speech in Algiers, he condemned what he described as powerful nations violating international law, though he did not directly mention the United States.
The image itself showed Trump dressed in a white robe, placing his hand on the head of a man lying down, as if healing him. He also held a glowing object, while symbolic elements such as the Statue of Liberty, fireworks, a fighter jet, and eagles appeared in the background. Critics argued that the imagery closely resembled traditional depictions of Jesus Christ, particularly the use of light and posture associated with divine healing.
Trump rejected those interpretations, saying the image was meant to show him as a doctor helping people. He told reporters that he “makes people better” and denied any intention to portray himself as a religious figure.
However, experts and commentators questioned that explanation. An art history professor noted that the image strongly reflects classic Christian artistic themes, including the use of radiant light to represent holiness and healing. This, combined with the visual style, led many to believe the comparison to Jesus was intentional or at least strongly implied.
Some of Trump’s own allies were among the critics. Brilyn Hollyhand called the image disrespectful, saying faith should not be used for political messaging. Riley Gaines also questioned the post, suggesting that humility would have been a better approach and warning against mocking religious beliefs.
Christian voters, including Catholics, played a major role in Trump’s 2024 election victory, making the controversy especially significant. While it remains unclear whether this incident will affect his support among religious groups, some analysts believe it could create tension within his base.
David Gibson said the situation raises important questions about how Catholic voters will respond, especially given the growing divide between Trump and the pope. He described the moment as a potential turning point, asking whether voters would align more with their political leader or their religious authority.
Even some religious leaders who have supported Trump expressed concern. Robert Barron said the president should apologize for his comments about the pope, though he also acknowledged Trump’s previous outreach to Catholic communities. Trump, however, insisted he had nothing to apologize for.
Pope Leo has recently become one of the strongest voices opposing the war involving Iran, urging restraint and calling for peaceful solutions. He has emphasized that religion should not be used to justify violence, a message widely seen as criticism of U.S. officials who have used religious language to defend military actions.
Tensions between Trump and the Vatican are not new. Trump previously clashed with Pope Francis over immigration policies, and after Francis’ death, he faced backlash for posting an image of himself dressed as the pope. However, observers note that his current conflict with Pope Leo appears more direct and personal.
Despite the controversy, some figures within Trump’s circle downplayed the incident. JD Vance described the image as a joke and suggested that religious institutions should focus on moral issues rather than political disputes.
With several members of Trump’s cabinet identifying as Catholic, including Marco Rubio, the situation highlights a complex intersection of politics, religion, and public perception. As the disagreement continues, it remains to be seen whether the controversy will have lasting political consequences or fade as tensions shift.
