Effort to halt U.S. military actions in Iran collapses when Republican lawmaker adjourns chamber during pro forma session.

An attempt by House Democrats to advance a resolution aimed at stopping U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict was halted Thursday after a Republican lawmaker abruptly ended a brief session of the House before a vote could take place.

The procedural move occurred during a pro forma session organized by Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Glenn Ivey of Maryland, who sought to pass the measure through unanimous consent while Congress remains on a two-week spring recess. According to NBC News, the strategy relied on the absence of objections to move the resolution forward without a formal roll call.

Rep. Chris Smith, a Republican from New Jersey, presided over the session and adjourned proceedings before recognizing Ivey to introduce the measure, effectively preventing consideration of the resolution.

The move prompted vocal اعتراض from Democrats present in the chamber, with lawmakers shouting objections as the session was gaveled closed.

The resolution followed recent remarks from Donald Trump ahead of a negotiation deadline involving Iran, during which he said “a whole civilization will die tonight,” underscoring the heightened tensions surrounding the conflict.

Because the House is not in full session, the pro forma procedure was one of the only available avenues for lawmakers to attempt action during the recess period. However, the objection and adjournment blocked the measure from advancing.

The development leaves the resolution stalled, with no immediate path forward until lawmakers return to Washington for regular legislative business.
