U.S. President Donald Trump on April 6 described what he called a historic mission to rescue an F-15 fighter jet airman shot down over Iranian territory on April 3.

“We’re here today to celebrate the success of one of the largest, most complex, and most harrowing combat search-and-rescue missions ever attempted by the military,” Trump told reporters during a White House press conference. “This is a rescue that’s very historic.”

The pilot was injured after the Iranian military downed his F-15E fighter jet early on April 3—the same day Tehran claimed responsibility for shooting down a U.S. A-10 Warthog warplane. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Trump has given Iran until 8 p.m. EDT on April 7 to reach a deal with the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, warning that failure to comply would result in intensified military strikes targeting Iran’s power plants and bridges.

Iran has rejected U.S. calls for a temporary cease-fire, instead insisting on a permanent end to the conflict, according to Iranian state media on April 6.

Six Key Takeaways From the April 6 Briefing

1. “Harrowing” Rescue Effort
Trump described the coordinated missions as “harrowing,” saying he ordered U.S. forces to do whatever was necessary to bring the airmen home. The weapons system officer evaded capture in Iran for nearly 48 hours before being rescued.

“That’s a long time when you’re in tough shape and when you’re bleeding,” Trump said.

The Pentagon has not released the officer’s name. Trump also credited the CIA for its role in locating the missing crew member, calling the effort “like finding a needle in a haystack.”

2. “Unbelievable” Contingency Plan
Terrain challenges complicated the rescue. Wet, sandy conditions prevented larger aircraft carrying personnel and equipment from taking off.

Trump said the military implemented a backup plan using lighter, faster aircraft to extract the team, adding that the disabled planes were destroyed to prevent them from falling into Iranian hands.

“We had equipment on the planes that we would have liked to recover, but it wasn’t worth spending more time there,” he said.

3. Massive Air Deployment
According to Trump, the second rescue mission involved 155 aircraft, including bombers, fighter jets, refueling tankers, and rescue planes.

An earlier mission to recover the pilot involved 21 aircraft flying at low altitude through hostile airspace.

“Our armed forces deployed into dangerous conditions, taking fire while operating at very low levels,” Trump said.

4. CIA’s Covert Role
CIA Director John Ratcliffe said the agency used both human intelligence and advanced technology to locate the missing airman, who had been hiding in a mountain crevice.

He described the effort as comparable to “searching for a single grain of sand in a desert.”

Ratcliffe added that the CIA carried out a deception campaign to mislead Iranian forces and buy time for the rescue operation.

5. Warning Over Information Leaks
Trump said the administration initially withheld details of the first rescue but that information was leaked to the media.

He warned that the government may pursue action against those responsible, arguing the leak endangered the mission by alerting Iranian forces to the airman’s presence.

6. “God Is Good” Message
After activating his emergency transponder, the rescued crew member sent a message reading, “God is Good,” according to War Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Hegseth praised the airman’s resilience and faith, noting that all U.S. personnel involved in the operation returned safely.

“These were high-risk, high-stakes missions carried out deep in enemy territory,” he said.
