The Bret Harte High School baseball team doesn’t have much luck playing on Mondays.

The last two games the Bullfrogs have played have fallen on a Monday, and both resulted in losses.

On March 30, Bret Harte lost to the Summerville Bears 10-3 in Tuolumne. On April 6, the Bullfrogs fell on the road 7-4 in a non-league game against the Amador Buffaloes in Sutter Creek.

The loss to Summerville snapped Bret Harte’s seven-game winning streak. The Bears scored three runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 6-0 lead. Bret Harte scored three times in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 6-3, but Summerville responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to 10-3. Neither team scored for the remainder of the game.

Senior pitcher Urijah Gish took the loss on the mound. Senior Landon Camacho and juniors Bryce Lenard and Aiden Cole each recorded two hits in the loss.

Bret Harte was scheduled to host Summerville on April 3 in Angels Camp, but rain made the field unplayable. The game has not been rescheduled.

On April 6, the Bullfrogs lost to Amador 7-4. The Buffaloes scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bret Harte scored once in the third, and Amador responded with one run in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 5-1. Bret Harte cut the deficit to 5-4 with three runs in the top of the sixth, but Amador plated two runs in the bottom of the inning and held on for the three-run win.

Bret Harte scored four runs on eight hits, including one double, drew three walks and stole two bases. At the plate, Gish went 2 for 3 with an RBI, stole a base and scored once; junior Finn Smith went 2 for 3 with an RBI and stole a base; sophomore Hensley Speyer went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored once; senior Sawyer Maurer went 1 for 3 and scored once; and Lenard went 1 for 3 with a double, walked once and scored once.

Cole took the loss on the mound, going five innings and allowing five runs – two earned – on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Speyer pitched one inning of relief and gave up two unearned runs on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Bret Harte will have to wait until April 10 to return to action. The Bullfrogs were scheduled to take on Riverbank in a league game April 7, but that contest was canceled and Bret Harte was awarded a forfeit victory. Bret Harte will host Riverbank on April 10 at 4 p.m. in Angels Camp.
