LEOMINSTER — Families looking for an outdoor activity during school vacation week are invited to a day of fishing and hands-on learning on Friday, April 24, at Barrett Park, 40 Barrett Parkway.
The afternoon begins with a trout stocking event hosted by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife from noon to 2 p.m. The public is invited to help stock the pond while learning about local fishing opportunities and how trout are introduced into area waters.
Later in the day, the annual Youth Fishing Derby will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. The derby is open to children ages 14 and under, and children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Participants are asked to bring a bucket for any fish caught and a bait container. A three-trout limit will be in effect.
Prizes will be awarded to all participants.
The event is sponsored by the Leominster Recreation Department and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife.
“The trout stocking and fishing derby are two great events to get the kids out during April school vacation week,” said Nick Abruzzi, assistant director of Barrett Park. “We are excited that this year will feature both events in one day.”
Abruzzi believes that these events are a great way to kick off the season of spring.
“Fishing at Barrett Park is already so popular, and hosting these events and having a lot of people here on April 24 will definitely be a great way to show what Barrett Park has to offer and kick off upcoming events,” he said.
Pre-registration is not required, but participants should check in at the Program Building before fishing begins. The event is free. For more information, call the Leominster Recreation Department at 978-534-7529.
