Russian forces carried out a prolonged aerial assault across Ukraine beginning Thursday evening and continuing into Friday, according to Ukrainian military officials, who said the operation involved hundreds of drones and multiple missile strikes.
Ukraine’s air force reported that a significant number of unmanned aerial vehicles entered the country’s airspace during the operation, describing the attack as part of an evolving strategy that combines overnight barrages with continued daytime strikes.
Air force spokesman Yurii Ihnat said the campaign reflects adjustments in Russia’s approach to penetrating Ukraine’s air defenses. “We can see that the enemy is using new routes, new drones which they are constantly modernizing, and new tactics,” he said in remarks broadcast on state television.
Ihnat stated that more than 400 long-range drones were launched over a 24-hour period, along with ten ballistic missiles that primarily targeted areas near the front lines. He compared the assault to an earlier strike earlier in the week, when an overnight wave of more than 300 drones was followed by a similarly large daytime attack that resulted in at least four fatalities.
The sustained nature of the bombardment has caused widespread disruption across affected regions. Authorities reported that extended air raid conditions led to the closure of government offices, public transportation systems, and businesses during the attacks. Ihnat said the strategy appears designed to disrupt daily life and strain public systems, stating that the attacks are “paralyzing the work of certain public institutions, as well as learning institutions.”
In the Kharkiv region in eastern Ukraine, officials reported casualties and damage from combined missile, bomb, and drone strikes. Regional governor Oleh Synehubov said one person was killed and 25 others were injured over the past 24 hours.
Among the strikes, four ballistic missiles hit the regional capital, Kharkiv, overnight. Authorities said one injury was recorded from that specific attack, though broader damage assessments were ongoing.
Ukrainian officials continue to monitor the situation as the aerial campaign unfolds, with indications that similar tactics may be used in future operations.
