The United States reached record levels of domestic energy production in 2025, including a historic volume of offshore oil output, according to new data released by the Department of the Interior.
The agency reported that approximately 714 million barrels of offshore oil were produced during the year, marking the highest level on record. The increase comes amid broader efforts by the administration of Donald Trump to expand domestic energy development.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the production gains reflect policy changes aimed at increasing access to resources and reducing regulatory barriers.
“President Trump has made it clear that America should fully develop its abundant energy resources in a way that strengthens our economy and benefits American families,” Burgum said.
He added that the administration has focused on streamlining permitting processes and providing regulatory certainty to energy producers, which he said has contributed to increased investment in offshore projects.
“By providing regulatory certainty, streamlining processes and encouraging responsible development, this administration is unlocking the full potential of our domestic energy resources — supporting job creation, lowering energy prices, strengthening energy security and maintaining strong safety and environmental protections,” Burgum said.
Officials noted that investment activity has expanded significantly in offshore regions, particularly in the Gulf of America, as companies respond to policy shifts designed to facilitate development.
Burgum described domestic energy output as a central component of national economic and security priorities. “American energy leadership is a cornerstone of our economic strength and national security,” he said, adding that increased production supports employment and energy affordability.
The administration’s focus on expanding production aligns with campaign commitments made by Trump during the 2024 election cycle, when he pledged to pursue policies aimed at increasing domestic energy supply and reducing regulatory constraints.
In earlier remarks, Trump said his administration would target federal regulations that limit production and emphasized the scale of U.S. energy resources, stating that the country possesses significant untapped reserves.
The latest figures underscore a broader trend of increased domestic output, as federal officials continue to emphasize energy independence and expanded production capacity across multiple sectors.
