American freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson was kidnapped Tuesday in central Baghdad by armed individuals, according to confirmation from Iraq’s Interior Ministry.
Authorities said security forces immediately launched an operation following the abduction, which occurred in a busy area of the Iraqi capital. Video circulating online shows multiple armed men surrounding a vehicle, opening its doors, and driving away with the journalist inside.
Iraqi officials stated that intelligence-led efforts resulted in the interception of one of the vehicles believed to be involved in the kidnapping. During the pursuit, the vehicle overturned, allowing security forces to arrest one suspect and seize a car connected to the incident.
According to reporting cited by Al Jazeera, the Interior Ministry said: “Security forces said they managed to arrest one of the suspects and seize one of the vehicles used in the kidnapping.”
The ministry added: “The Ministry of Interior announces that this evening, a foreign journalist was kidnapped by unknown individuals. Security forces immediately launched an operation to apprehend the perpetrators, acting on precise intelligence and through intensive field operations, tracking the kidnappers’ movements.”
Officials further stated: “The pursuit resulted in the interception of a vehicle belonging to the kidnappers, which overturned as they attempted to flee. Security forces were able to arrest one of the suspects and seize one of the vehicles used in the crime.”
Authorities said operations are ongoing to locate the remaining suspects and secure the journalist’s release. “The Ministry affirms that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining individuals involved, secure the release of the kidnapped journalist, and take all necessary legal measures against all those involved in this criminal act, in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
Kittleson’s current whereabouts and condition remain unknown.
U.S. officials acknowledged the incident but provided limited details. A statement from the U.S. government said: “The Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans. We are closely tracking these reports. Due to privacy and other considerations, we have nothing further to share at this time.”
Alex Plitsas, identified as Kittleson’s designated U.S. point of contact, said in a public statement that she “was abducted and may have taken hostage in Baghdad by Khatib Hezbollah,” adding that her “whereabouts and condition [are] unknown.”
The incident comes amid ongoing security challenges in Iraq, where armed groups, including Iranian-backed militias, continue to operate. Iraqi authorities have not publicly identified the group responsible for the abduction, though investigations remain active.
