A small New Jersey town recently witnessed a reunion two years in the making — one that began with a missing dog in Texas and ended with a joyful moment no one thought would ever come.

Koko, a beloved family dog who disappeared from her home in Glenn Heights, Texas, was found more than 1,500 miles away, wandering near a shopping mall in Clark, New Jersey, earlier this month. What followed was a chain of events filled with kindness, patience and, ultimately, a long-awaited homecoming.

According to the Clark Township Police Department, the story began March 4, when a passerby spotted the small gray-and-white dog roaming around Clark Commons and called authorities. Patrolman Nick Kurus responded and brought the pup to police headquarters, where officers were able to scan her and trace her information through a pet finder service, the department said in a press release published March 9, 2026.

That search led to a phone call Koko’s family never expected to receive.

When Kurus reached the dog’s last recorded owners, they were stunned to learn their missing pet had been found alive and safe in New Jersey after vanishing from Texas two years earlier. Police said the owners — whom the department did not publicly identify — told officers Koko had disappeared in Texas, where they live, and had been gone ever since.

With Koko finally located, a reunion was quickly set in motion. According to the Clark Township Police Department’s March 9 press release, plans were made for the family to travel to New Jersey and pick her up three days later, on March 7.

While they waited for that long-awaited moment, Koko found herself surrounded by an unexpected group of caretakers.

Rather than placing her in a shelter, officers and staff at the Clark Township Police Department stepped in to care for her themselves. Over the next three days, they bathed her, fed her, walked her regularly and made sure she had everything she needed to feel safe and comfortable.

Some of those comforts came from the officers themselves. According to the department’s March 9 press release, some of the items used to care for Koko were even “purchased by department members out of their own pockets.”

Speaking on behalf of the department, Police Director Patrick Grady explained why the staff felt so strongly about keeping Koko close while she waited to go home.

“As a dog lover amongst many other dog lovers, we were not going to make that puppy wait in a shelter or pound,” Grady said, according to the Clark Township Police Department’s March 9, 2026, press release.

Grady also praised the officers and staff who helped care for the dog while continuing their normal responsibilities.

“I want to commend all the officers and staff who went above and beyond to care for this dog while still performing their duties,” he said. “Koko was living her best life inside the dispatch room the last three days, and hopefully it will get even better being reunited with her family again.”

That reunion finally came March 7 — and it was everything her owners had hoped for.

When they arrived at police headquarters, Koko did not hesitate.

She was seen “running right to her mommy,” instantly closing the distance that had separated them for two long years, the Clark Township Police Department said in its March 9 press release. Her owners, overwhelmed with emotion, were “extremely grateful” for the care and compassion the officers had shown their dog.

For the officers who had grown attached to Koko during her short stay, the moment was both joyful and bittersweet. After several days of feeding, walking and doting on her, they, too, had formed a bond.

But in the end, the happiest part of Koko’s story was watching her go home.

After a journey no one can fully explain, her story did not end in heartbreak. It ended in love — with a family made whole again, a police department that opened its heart and one little dog finally back where she belongs.
