The White House is forcefully pushing back against recent media reports suggesting that the Iranian regime prefers Vice President JD Vance to lead potential negotiations, dismissing the claims as false and describing them as part of a coordinated “foreign propaganda campaign.”

The controversy began after CNN published a report citing anonymous “regional sources” who alleged that Iranian officials would rather engage directly with Vance instead of other key figures currently involved in diplomatic efforts. According to the report, those sources suggested that Iran views Vance as more likely to seek a swift resolution to the ongoing tensions.

A similar narrative was echoed by the New York Post, which reported that Vance is “quietly emerging” as a central figure in backchannel discussions. The outlet cited unnamed sources claiming that Iranian officials see Vance—often characterized as skeptical of prolonged foreign military involvement—as a potentially different kind of negotiator compared to others in the administration.

However, officials within the administration of President Donald Trump have firmly rejected these assertions. In a response to inquiries, a White House official told Breitbart News that the reports are “utterly false” and appear to rely heavily on vague or unverifiable sourcing.

“This obvious operation sourced entirely to anonymous or ‘regional’ sources is clearly a coordinated foreign propaganda campaign meant to undermine the president,” the official stated, emphasizing that such narratives could be intended to sow division or confusion during a sensitive period of diplomatic engagement.

The reports surfaced at a time when the U.S. is actively exploring diplomatic options with Iran, even as military tensions remain high. President Trump recently confirmed that multiple senior figures are involved in the ongoing discussions, underscoring that negotiations are being handled as a team effort rather than by any single individual.

“Well, he’s involved in them — JD is involved, and Marco’s involved, and Jared Kushner is involved, very smart guy, and Steve Witkoff, smart guy, is involved — and I’m involved,” Trump told reporters, referencing a broad coalition of advisers and officials contributing to the diplomatic process.

Among those named are Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior advisor Jared Kushner, both of whom have been actively engaged in Middle East negotiations. The administration has framed this collaborative approach as essential to balancing diplomatic outreach with national security priorities.

For his part, Vance has consistently aligned himself with Trump’s position on Iran, particularly regarding nuclear policy. He has reiterated that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons and expressed confidence in Trump’s ability to navigate the situation effectively while avoiding the prolonged conflicts that characterized past U.S. involvement in the Middle East.

“I trust President Trump can get the job done… and make sure the mistakes of the past aren’t repeated,” Vance said in earlier remarks, referencing decades-long military engagements in the region.

Note how this piece of utter fiction isn't even sourced to the Iranians, but rather "two regional sources." Pretty obvious that CNN fell for a coordinated foreign propaganda op meant to undermine President Trump, VP Vance and the entire Admin, as they engage in negotiations. https://t.co/AxD5T3Gc80

The media reports have also drawn criticism from political commentators and strategists. Vince Coglianese, a radio personality and editor, publicly questioned the credibility of the claims, suggesting they resemble a deliberate disinformation effort. Similarly, Republican strategist Andrew Surabian argued that the reports may reflect a coordinated attempt to undermine the administration’s negotiating position.

In a partial clarification, one of the journalists behind the New York Post story later noted that the issue may not be about Iran perceiving Vance as “softer,” but rather a belief among some sources that other U.S. negotiators may have misunderstood Iran’s positions during earlier talks.

It’s not that Iran thinks Vance would have a softer touch, it's that they think Witkoff and Kushner didn't understand what Iran was offering during talks that precipitated the bombings, a US source involved in mediation efforts told me. https://t.co/wnXx4T3Yaq https://t.co/Vtope6hJM9

Still, the White House maintains that the broader narrative is misleading and potentially harmful. Officials stress that negotiations with Iran remain complex, sensitive, and tightly coordinated among multiple senior leaders—rejecting any suggestion that a single figure has been singled out by Tehran as a preferred intermediary.

As diplomatic efforts continue alongside heightened geopolitical tensions, the administration appears determined to control the narrative and counter what it sees as attempts to distort or disrupt ongoing negotiations.
