President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States received what he described as a “very big” and financially significant development tied to Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, though he declined to provide details about its nature.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump indicated that the development involved energy resources and arrived the same day, calling it a “present” from Iran without elaborating on the circumstances surrounding it. In remarks captured in a video statement, he said, “They gave us a present, and the present arrived today. It was a very big present, worth a tremendous amount of money, and I’m not going to tell you what the present is, but it was a very significant prize.”
Trump linked the development to ongoing U.S. engagement with Iranian officials following recent hostilities in the region, suggesting it reflected progress in negotiations. He said the gesture indicated that the United States was now interacting with a different set of Iranian leaders than before.
“They gave it to us, and they said they were going to give it, so that meant one thing to me: we’re dealing with the right people,” Trump said. “We have, really, regime change. You know, this is a change in the regime, because the leaders are all very different than the ones that we started off with that created all those problems.”
The comments come after a conflict in the Middle East last month that resulted in the death of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump did not specify whether the development was directly tied to negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for oil and gas, or to broader diplomatic efforts.
No additional details about the nature of the “present” were immediately available.
