Since the release of the first ‘Sonic’ movie in 2020, comedian Jim Carrey’s character of Dr. Robitnik has been a fan favorite. Known for his over-the-top physical comedy, Carrey utilized his talent to bring Robotnik to life, instantly gaining popularity and opinion as one of the best characters in the franchise. Carrey went on to star as Robotnik in the next installment of Sonic, even after his apparent retirement from the industry.

After Robotnik’s apparent death in Sonic 2, released in 2022, fans grew concerned that this was the last they had seen of Carrey in the franchise, but were delighted when Carrey came out of retirement to return in the 2024 installment of Sonic, playing two separate roles.

Sonic 3 ended again with both of Carrey’s characters dying. His final moments onscreen spent delivering a goodbye monologue directed at the character’s sidekick Agent Stone. But for fans of Carrey, the speech was felt to be Carrey saying goodbye to the public in what he had decided would be his final film appearance of his illustrious career.

Again, fans were left to wonder if this was Carrey’s final appearance onscreen as the star has become increasingly reclusive as of the past five years.

After two years of waiting for a definitive answer to this question, fans have finally gotten an answer as the Sonic 4 teaser trailer was released yesterday, confirming Carrey’s return as the beloved character.
