An officer was killed after a drone launched by what authorities described as “outlaw groups” struck near the headquarters of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service in Baghdad on Saturday, according to an official statement.
The attack targeted an area close to one of Iraq’s most sensitive security institutions, raising concerns about the ability of armed groups to operate within heavily guarded parts of the capital. While details about the specific group responsible have not been confirmed, the term “outlaw groups” is often used by Iraqi officials to refer to militias operating outside formal state control.
The strike underscores ongoing security challenges in Iraq, where drone attacks have increasingly been used as a tactic by non-state actors. These incidents have heightened tensions and placed additional pressure on government forces tasked with maintaining stability, particularly in key urban centers like Baghdad.
Authorities have not yet released further information about the circumstances of the attack or whether additional casualties or damage occurred. An investigation is expected as officials assess the source of the drone and the intent behind the strike.
The incident highlights the fragile security environment in Iraq, where sporadic attacks continue to test the country’s intelligence and defense systems despite ongoing efforts to strengthen national security.
