As anticipation builds ahead of the English League Cup final, Pep Guardiola chose restraint over rivalry, declining to engage in pre-match psychological tactics with Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta.

Speaking on Friday, the Manchester City manager appeared to downplay any lingering tensions between the two clubs, instead reflecting on broader global concerns. His remarks signaled a deliberate effort to shift focus away from controversy and toward the significance of the match itself.

Guardiola’s comments came in response to questions about past friction between the sides, particularly surrounding accusations of so-called “dark arts” tactics. The phrase gained prominence following a heated Premier League encounter in September 2024, when a 2–2 draw between Manchester City and Arsenal sparked criticism from several City players.

At the time, City midfielder Bernardo Silva suggested Arsenal had pushed the boundaries of acceptable play, while defender John Stones accused them of disrupting the rhythm of the game. Former City captain Kyle Walker went further, labeling Arsenal’s approach as “dark arts,” a comment that quickly became a flashpoint in the rivalry.

Arteta, who previously worked under Guardiola at City between 2016 and 2019, responded at the time with a measured but pointed remark, suggesting he possessed detailed knowledge of his former club. Guardiola later called on Arteta to clarify his comments, but the issue gradually faded without resolution.

Now, with a major domestic trophy at stake, Guardiola appears unwilling to revisit that dispute. Emphasizing respect for match officials and the competitive process, he made clear that such matters should be handled on the pitch rather than through public exchanges.

Instead, the City manager turned his attention to Arsenal’s impressive rise under Arteta. He praised the team’s cohesion, resilience, and tactical maturity, describing them as one of the standout sides in European football this season.

Arsenal currently sits at the top of the Premier League table with a commanding lead and remains in contention across multiple competitions, including the Champions League and FA Cup.

Guardiola acknowledged the scale of the challenge his team faces, framing the final as an opportunity to measure City’s level against one of the most in-form teams in the game. His comments reflected both caution and admiration, highlighting Arsenal’s transformation into a consistent title contender.

For Arteta, the occasion carries added personal significance. Having spent several years as Guardiola’s assistant, he has often spoken of the profound influence the City manager has had on his career. However, with both now leading rival clubs competing for major honors, their relationship has inevitably evolved.

Arteta acknowledged that dynamic, noting that professional competition has altered their interactions. Despite that, he emphasized that his respect and appreciation for Guardiola remain unchanged, describing him as a lasting source of inspiration.

Sunday’s final is expected to be a closely contested encounter, pitting two of England’s most tactically sophisticated teams against each other. Beyond the trophy at stake, the match represents another chapter in a growing rivalry defined by mutual respect, contrasting styles, and the pursuit of dominance at the highest level of the game.

With both sides enjoying strong seasons and aiming to add silverware, the focus now shifts fully to the pitch, where the outcome will be decided not by words, but by performance.
