Former FBI Director James Comey has been subpoenaed as part of a Department of Justice investigation described as a “grand conspiracy” probe, according to multiple reports citing sources familiar with the matter.
Two individuals with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the subpoena was issued, with details indicating it is connected to Comey’s alleged involvement in drafting a January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment addressing claims of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election between Hillary Clinton and President Donald Trump.
According to the reported findings, the investigation centers on allegations that officials engaged in misconduct during and after the 2016 election cycle. The inquiry is described as examining whether government actors “bent the rules, broke the law and lied under oath to investigate, prosecute and otherwise undermine Trump from his election in 2016 through his federal indictments in 2023.”
The subpoena issued to Comey last week is specifically tied to his role in preparing the intelligence assessment that concluded Russia acted in ways that were seen as benefiting Trump during the election.
Separately, reported accounts state that the investigation is being led by Jason A. Reding Quiñones, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. Sources cited in those reports also confirmed the issuance of the subpoena as part of the ongoing inquiry.
A post circulating online referenced the development as the probe continues to expand.
The current investigation follows earlier actions reported in July 2025, when the FBI initiated inquiries into both Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan regarding their involvement in examining allegations of coordination between Trump’s campaign and Russia.
The Department of Justice has not publicly released additional details regarding the scope or timeline of the investigation.
