LeBron James etched his name deeper into basketball history on Thursday night, matching the all-time NBA record for regular-season games played. The Los Angeles Lakers star appeared in his 1,611th career game against the Miami Heat, tying Hall of Famer Robert Parish for the most in league history.
The milestone came less than 24 hours after James delivered a near-perfect performance in Houston, where he shot 13-of-14 from the field in a 124-116 victory. Despite a late-night flight that saw the Lakers arrive in Miami before dawn, James chose to suit up, underscoring his relentless competitiveness.
“You have to respect his competitive spirit,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “He’s not just competing against the league, but against Father Time — and winning.”
Fans packed the arena early, with hundreds gathering courtside during warmups just to watch the 39-year-old prepare. James had been listed as questionable due to foot issues and a knock to his elbow the previous night, but he pushed through fatigue to play in a city where he won two championships during his tenure with Miami.
Lakers coach JJ Redick said the team’s mindset played a role in the decision. “There’s a strong belief right now. The guys want to be out there,” he said.
James now sits comfortably ahead of active players in games played, with Russell Westbrook trailing by more than 300 appearances. Parish, who set the record in 1996 after surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, has publicly endorsed James to surpass him.
“No one deserves it more,” Parish said earlier this week.
With durability and excellence spanning over two decades, James is poised to soon stand alone atop one of basketball’s most enduring records.
