Patience paid off for one wildlife photographer who spent nearly a full day waiting for a rare moment in the wild.
Wildlife photographer Terry Nunn recently shared a collection of striking images on Instagram featuring a rare leucistic bald eagle spotted in southwest Missouri. The photographs show the unusually pale bird moving between trees and gliding through open sky — an uncommon sight that quickly drew attention from wildlife enthusiasts.
In the post, Nunn described returning to the area with the hope of seeing the eagle again and capturing it on camera.
“I drove back over to southwest Missouri hoping to find the leucistic eagle again,” he wrote. “No guarantees. No shortcuts. Just patience.”
Nunn said he spent about eight hours watching the eagle as it moved between trees, waiting for it to come closer. For much of the day, the distance made it difficult to capture the kind of images he was hoping for.
“I spent eight hours watching her fly to a few different trees, just hoping she would come a little closer,” he said.
Finally, late in the day, the eagle flew within a couple hundred yards — his best opportunity after multiple trips to the area.
Even then, capturing the images required persistence. Many of the shots were taken while Nunn lay on the ground, photographing through fences and trees to find a clear angle.
The moment stood apart from others in his experience photographing wildlife.
“This wasn’t just another sighting,” he said.
The images, he added, have become some of the most meaningful of his career.
“These are some of the photos I’m most proud of in my entire photography career,” Nunn said. “Not because they’re perfect, but because of what it took to make them and the subject.”
Leucistic bald eagles are considered extremely rare in the wild, making encounters like this especially significant for photographers and wildlife observers alike.
In the end, the photographs reflect more than just a rare bird — they capture the kind of patience and persistence that often go unseen behind the lens.
