Former director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), Joe Kent, is reportedly under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over allegations of leaking classified information. The reported probe has added a new layer of controversy to Kent’s sudden resignation earlier this week.
According to Shelby Talcott, a White House correspondent for Semafor, multiple sources have confirmed that the investigation was already underway prior to Kent stepping down from his position.
Talcott initially cited three sources familiar with the matter and later added that a fourth independent source corroborated the claims, reinforcing the credibility of the report. However, as of now, officials have not publicly disclosed detailed information about the nature or scope of the alleged leaks.
Kent announced his resignation in a post on X on Tuesday, stating that his decision was rooted in deep disagreement with U.S. foreign policy—particularly the ongoing conflict involving Iran. In his statement, Kent argued that Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States and claimed that external pressures, including influence from Israel and pro-Israel lobbying groups in America, played a role in escalating the conflict.
In a formal resignation letter addressed to Donald Trump, Kent expressed continued support for the political values and foreign policy principles Trump championed during his presidential campaigns in 2016, 2020, and 2024.
However, he suggested that there had been a shift in direction. Kent emphasized that, up until mid-2025, there was a shared understanding that prolonged involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts could drain American resources and cost lives without clear benefit.
Kent’s remarks painted a picture of growing internal disagreement within national security circles, especially regarding U.S. engagement abroad. His resignation, coupled with the reported FBI investigation, raises broader questions about internal divisions, policy direction, and the handling of sensitive information at the highest levels of government.
Responding to the resignation, Trump publicly dismissed Kent’s departure as ultimately beneficial. He described Kent as “a nice guy” but criticized him as being “very weak on security.” Trump also noted that while he had read Kent’s resignation statement, he did not have a close working relationship with him.
As the situation continues to unfold, attention remains focused on whether formal charges will emerge, as well as the potential political and national security implications of the case.
The combination of a high-profile resignation, allegations of misconduct, and sharp political reactions ensures that this story will remain a significant point of discussion in the days ahead.
