Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer delivered a forceful condemnation of the proposed SAVE America Act over the weekend, describing it as “one of the most despicable pieces of legislation” he has encountered during his long career in public service.
His remarks come as the bill—formally known as the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act—is expected to be brought before the Senate for a vote in the coming days.
Speaking during a Sunday call with reporters, Schumer accused President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans of attempting to fundamentally undermine the U.S. democratic system. According to Schumer, the legislation is designed to suppress voter participation on a massive scale.
“This is nothing short of an attempt to disenfranchise millions of Americans,” Schumer said. “It strikes at the very core of our democracy and represents a dangerous step backward for voting rights in this country.”
The SAVE Act, which focuses on tightening voter eligibility requirements, has been championed by Republicans as a necessary measure to ensure election integrity. However, critics like Schumer argue that such measures could disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including minorities, seniors, and low-income voters.
Schumer did not hold back in his criticism, calling the bill “a dagger to the heart of our democracy” and urging lawmakers to reject it outright. “Nothing is more important right now than defeating this legislation,” he emphasized, framing the upcoming vote as a critical moment for the preservation of voting rights in America.
The Senate is expected to take up the bill under the leadership of Majority Leader John Thune, who recently confirmed that the measure will be brought to the floor. Despite this, its path to passage remains uncertain.
Current Senate rules require a 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster, and Thune has indicated he is not willing to pursue changes to that rule—making it unlikely the bill will garner enough bipartisan support to advance.
In his remarks, Schumer also launched a broader political attack, suggesting that Trump’s support for the legislation is rooted in electoral concerns. “He believes he’s going to lose,” Schumer claimed. “And instead of expanding participation, he’s looking for ways to manipulate the system.”
The New York senator went further, accusing Trump of attempting to influence future elections through legislative means, drawing controversial comparisons to past election disputes. He warned that such actions could erode public trust in the electoral process.
Despite uncertainty surrounding the final version of the bill that will be presented, Schumer said Senate Democrats are preparing to respond decisively. “We don’t yet know exactly what will come to the floor,” he noted, “but our caucus is united and ready for every possible scenario.”
He concluded by stressing the high stakes of the debate, warning that the legislation could have long-lasting consequences for American democracy. “This could go down as one of the most damaging efforts to restrict voting access in our nation’s history,” Schumer said. “We cannot and will not allow that to happen.”
