Fans took to social media in outrage on Monday after photos surfaced showing the aftermath inside Hollywood’s iconic Dolby Theatre, where the annual Academy Awards had taken place just hours earlier.
The images revealed piles of trash scattered across the venue—discarded water bottles, snack wrappers, food debris, and abandoned event programs—painting a stark contrast to the glamour typically associated with Hollywood’s biggest night.
The viral photos quickly ignited a wave of criticism, as many fans pointed out what they saw as glaring hypocrisy among A-list celebrities who frequently speak out about climate change and environmental responsibility. Online commenters expressed disbelief that individuals who publicly advocate for sustainability would leave behind such a mess.
“One would think that people who constantly promote environmental awareness would practice what they preach,” one user wrote. Another sarcastically added, “Where’s all that ‘save the planet’ energy now?” Others echoed similar frustrations, highlighting the contradiction between red-carpet speeches about protecting the Earth and the apparent disregard for cleanliness and waste reduction behind the scenes.
Several critics specifically called out the abundance of plastic waste visible in the images, noting that single-use bottles appeared to be among the most common items left behind. “It’s one bottle after another,” one social media user remarked, pointing to the irony given ongoing campaigns against plastic pollution.
The backlash also tapped into broader frustrations about perceived elitism. Some users argued that such behavior reflects a disconnect between wealthy celebrities and everyday expectations of responsibility. “You’d think they’d show a bit more class,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “The elites make the mess, and someone else is left to clean it up.”
Adding fuel to the criticism, several prominent figures—including Jane Fonda, Javier Bardem, and Leonardo DiCaprio—used their time during the ceremony to speak about environmental issues and climate change. For some viewers, this only deepened the sense of contradiction between words and actions.
Environmental advocacy has long been a recurring theme at the Oscars, with many stars using the global platform to raise awareness about sustainability. However, the images from inside the theater have reignited debate over whether those messages are being matched by real-world behavior.
While it remains unclear who was directly responsible for the mess or how quickly the venue was cleaned afterward, the incident has sparked a wider conversation about accountability, personal responsibility, and the expectations placed on public figures who champion global causes.
