Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was reportedly transported to Russia for medical treatment after being injured during airstrikes on Tehran, according to foreign media reports that have not been independently confirmed.
A Kuwaiti media account cited by the Daily Mail reported that the 56-year-old Iranian leader was secretly flown to Moscow aboard a Russian military aircraft following strikes carried out on Feb. 28. According to the report he underwent surgery, Khamenei is receiving medical care at a private hospital connected to one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residences.
The evacuation was described as part of a confidential operation intended to secure medical treatment outside Iran amid concerns about the safety of maintaining care inside the country during ongoing military hostilities.
Neither Iranian nor Russian officials have publicly confirmed the reported transfer to Moscow or the alleged medical procedures.
Mojtaba Khamenei assumed Iran’s top leadership position after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during the Feb. 28 strikes. Since that time, multiple unverified reports have circulated claiming the younger Khamenei was also wounded during the attack.
Some accounts have suggested he suffered severe injuries and may have fallen into a coma, although those reports remain unconfirmed.
Additional claims cited by the Sun allege that the injuries were extensive. According to a report from The Sun, a source communicating through an exiled Iranian dissident in London said Khamenei suffered major internal trauma and may have lost one or both legs.
The same account said Iranian Health Minister Mohammad-Reza Zafarghandi, who is trained as a trauma surgeon, is overseeing treatment.
Those claims have not been verified by independent sources.
U.S. officials have publicly suggested that the Iranian leader was injured in the strikes but have not provided detailed confirmation about the extent of his condition.
Speaking at a press conference Friday, War Secretary Pete Hegseth said American officials believe Khamenei sustained serious injuries.
“We know the new so-called, not-so-supreme leader is wounded and likely disfigured,” Hegseth said.
Iranian authorities have acknowledged that Khamenei was injured during the attack but have released few details about his medical condition or whereabouts.
As the conflict continues, uncertainty surrounding the health of Iran’s leadership has fueled speculation across international media, though many of the reported details remain unverified.
