(ARLINGTON, TX.) – Marcus Ericsson delivered the best lap of his IndyCar career on Saturday afternoon, storming to pole position for Sunday’s Grand Prix of Arlington with a 1:34.3652 lap. The Andretti Global driver executed flawlessly in the debut of IndyCar’s new single‑car, single‑lap Fast Six shootout, introduced specifically for the Arlington event.
Ericsson in the No. 28 In Pwr Honda margin was emphatic—over half a second faster than Alex Palou, in the No. 10 DHL Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing, who will start alongside him on the front row. For a driver who endured two difficult seasons in 2024 and 2025, the pole marks a major resurgence.
After two mentally draining seasons, Ericsson’s pole marks a major turnaround. Sportskeeda highlighted how meaningful this moment is for the Swedish veteran.

“I’ve waited long enough; I can tell you that,” a jubilant Ericsson said. “I think 2013 was the last pole I had. I feel like this is a giant thing for me because of that. Two-hundredths of a second away at St. Pete.”
“I want to shout out my pit crew here,” Ericsson said. “They’ve done a tremendous job. We were all over the place in Q1, but in Q2 and Q3 they improved the car. It’s just amazing.”
IndyCar debuted a modified format for Arlington:
- Traditional elimination rounds for Groups 1 & 2
- Single‑car, single‑lap Fast Six to highlight each driver individually This change created pressure‑packed laps and rewarded precision.
Scott McLaughlin—fastest in Practice 1—in the No.3 DEX Team Penske Chevrolet saw his qualifying hopes end early after clipping the inside curb at Turn 8 and crashing in Round 2. He’ll start deep in the field despite having one of the fastest cars all weekend.
Kyle Kirkwood, who topped Practice 2, made a costly mistake in the No.27 JM Bullion Honda for Andretti Global on his push lap in the Fast 12, missing the final round and settling for P7.
- Ericsson and Palou will lead the field into Turn 1 on a tight, technical street circuit.
- McLaughlin’s charge from the back could be one of the day’s biggest storylines.
- Kirkwood, Power, and O’Ward all have race‑winning pace despite mixed qualifying results.
- Tire strategy and track evolution will play a major role on Arlington’s brand‑new surf
