President Donald Trump has appointed Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, to the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Board of Visitors, placing her on the federal advisory panel responsible for reviewing the academy’s curriculum, morale, and overall operations.

The appointment was first reported by Colorado-based NBC affiliate KOAA, which said Erika Kirk was added to the board over the weekend.

According to the board’s official listings, the selection came nearly a year after Trump appointed Charlie Kirk to the same oversight body.

Rep. August Pfluger of Texas, who serves as chairman of the Board of Visitors, said he had previously encouraged the appointment and praised the decision.

Pfluger told the outlet that Erika Kirk was “the right person to fill Charlie’s place” and continue the work he began encouraging young Americans to pursue public service and military leadership.

Charlie Kirk, a conservative commentator and co-founder of Turning Point USA, attended his first meeting as a member of the board in August 2025.

Weeks later, he was killed on Sept. 10 during an appearance at Utah Valley University. Following his death, Erika Kirk assumed leadership responsibilities at Turning Point USA, the political organization her husband founded.

The Air Force Academy Board of Visitors is a congressionally mandated advisory group that evaluates the academy’s operations and reports its findings to the secretaries of War and the Air Force. While the board does not have direct authority to implement policy changes, it issues recommendations concerning academic programs, institutional conditions, and student morale.

Erika Kirk’s appointment comes as the board could soon review whether to grant Charlie Kirk posthumous recognition from the academy.

The Air Force Academy Association of Graduates previously examined the possibility of awarding him an honorary degree or similar recognition but withdrew the proposal following criticism from some alumni and observers who argued that his political activism and lack of military service made such recognition controversial.

The association later decided to defer the question to the Board of Visitors, the same body where Erika Kirk now serves.

Charlie Kirk was widely known as one of the most visible young conservative figures aligned with Trump and the broader MAGA movement. Through Turning Point USA, he built a national network of student activists focused on promoting conservative ideas on college campuses across the country.

Trump frequently praised Kirk’s work organizing younger voters and mobilizing conservative activism on campuses, and Kirk regularly appeared at Trump campaign events and political rallies.

The president’s earlier decision in March 2025 to appoint Charlie Kirk to the Air Force Academy’s oversight board was widely viewed as recognition of that political partnership.

Since his death, supporters and several Trump allies have advocated honoring his legacy through official recognition at the academy, while critics have argued that his highly partisan activism makes such recognition inappropriate for a military institution.

Erika Kirk’s appointment places a member of his immediate family on the board that could ultimately be asked to consider those potential honors.
