JetBlue Airways has requested a temporary ground stop affecting all its destinations, according to an advisory issued Tuesday by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA said the ground stop was issued at the airline’s request but did not provide additional details about the reason behind the move. The airline had not immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the situation.

A ground stop is an air traffic control measure that temporarily prevents aircraft from departing for a specific destination or airline network. The measure is typically implemented to address safety concerns, severe weather conditions, or operational and technical issues that may affect flight operations.

When a ground stop is in place, planes that have not yet departed are held at their originating airports until the issue is resolved. Flights already in the air are usually allowed to continue to their destinations, though they may experience delays or changes depending on the situation.

Ground stops can have a ripple effect across the aviation system, especially when they involve a major airline with operations at numerous airports. Such measures often lead to delays and schedule disruptions for passengers across multiple cities.

JetBlue operates an extensive network of domestic and international flights, particularly along the U.S. East Coast, in the Caribbean, and across parts of Latin America. A system-wide ground stop can therefore impact a large number of travelers and flights within a short period.

Airlines sometimes request ground stops themselves when they are dealing with operational challenges such as technology outages, scheduling issues, or aircraft availability problems. By temporarily halting departures, airlines can prevent further disruptions from spreading throughout their network while they work to resolve the underlying problem.

As of Tuesday morning, aviation authorities had not indicated how long the ground stop would remain in place or when normal operations might resume. Passengers scheduled to travel on JetBlue flights were advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, as delays or cancellations could occur while the airline works to restore normal service.
