Brandon Hospital proudly celebrated a monumental milestone on February 18, 2026, as a brave micropremie named John Delancey III finally headed home.
Born prematurely at just 22 weeks on June 6, 2025, little John entered the world weighing a mere 1 pound and 0.2 ounces. Over the course of 257 days of dedicated care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), he defied the odds, growing from a fragile newborn into a thriving baby weighing 17 pounds and 3.5 ounces.

Affectionately embraced by his family and the hospital staff under a variety of sweet nicknames—including Johnboy, JJ, Johnny, Lil John, and Big John—his incredible perseverance has been a profound source of inspiration across the entire hospital. Surrounded by compassionate nurses, physicians, and therapists, John's journey highlights the resilience of life and the power of dedicated medical care.
“It takes extraordinary teamwork to care for a baby born this early, and John reminded us every day why this work matters,” said Dr. Kiran Dwarakanath, the NICU medical director. “Micropremies face incredible challenges from the moment they arrive, yet John showed us time and again what a fighter he is. Our team poured their hearts into helping him grow stronger and it has been a privilege to watch him reach this milestone”.

To honor his remarkable fight, the Brandon Hospital NICU team organized a joyous graduation day for John. The celebration was filled with a special graduation walk, cheers, smiles, and heartfelt goodbyes as the staff reflected on the many months spent nurturing his growth and celebrating his every achievement.
Reflecting on their time with the beloved baby, members of the care team shared in a joint statement: “We are so proud of John and the strength he has shown. He has already made a lasting mark on all of us”.
