Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been selected to become the next Supreme Leader of Iran following the death of his father, according to several media reports from within the country.

Reports indicate that Iran’s powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts, voted overwhelmingly to nominate Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei for the nation’s highest political and religious position. The announcement was first reported by Tasnim News Agency and later echoed by other Iranian media outlets.

If officially confirmed, Mojtaba Khamenei would become the third Supreme Leader in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a role that carries immense political, religious, and military authority. The position was first held by Ruhollah Khomeini following the 1979 Islamic Revolution and later passed to Ali Khamenei after Khomeini’s death in 1989.

Mojtaba’s rise to power comes only a week after his father was reportedly killed during an Israeli strike on his compound in Tehran.

The attack occurred amid rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East following a series of military actions between Israel, Iran, and the United States.

Iranian state-affiliated media organizations have already begun describing Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s incoming Supreme Leader. Fars News Agency announced in a post on X that Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei would assume leadership of the Islamic Republic, signaling that the country’s leadership transition is already underway.

Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered a powerful and influential figure behind the scenes in Iran’s political system.

Although he has rarely held formal government positions, analysts have frequently described him as a key advisor and gatekeeper to his father during Ali Khamenei’s decades-long rule.

According to Trey Yingst, Mojtaba was widely seen as the individual who controlled access to the former Supreme Leader and played a critical role in shaping major political decisions.

Yingst also noted that Mojtaba maintains strong ties with Iran’s powerful military force, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, often referred to as the IRGC.

Shortly after the reports of his selection surfaced, the IRGC released a statement pledging loyalty and obedience to the new leadership.

In the statement, the military organization declared that it was prepared to fully follow what it described as the “divine orders” of the new Supreme Leader.

The IRGC emphasized its commitment to defending the ideals of the Islamic Revolution and preserving the legacy of Iran’s founding revolutionary leaders. The statement also referenced both Imam Khomeini and Ali Khamenei, describing them as foundational figures whose vision would continue under Mojtaba’s leadership.

“The IRGC, as a soldier and the powerful arm of the Guardianship, while supporting the decision of the Assembly of Experts, is ready to fully obey and devote itself to the divine orders of the Supreme Leader of the time, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei,” the statement read, according to Iranian state media.

The leadership transition comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension in the Middle East. Just days earlier, Donald Trump announced that the United States and Israel had carried out joint strikes against Iranian military facilities. According to Trump, the operation aimed to destroy Iranian missile stockpiles and significantly weaken the country’s military capabilities.

Trump later suggested that whoever becomes Iran’s next Supreme Leader would ultimately need to consider the stance of the United States in order to maintain stability.

Speaking to ABC News, Trump said the future Iranian leader “would have to get approval” from the United States to remain in power.

“He’s going to have to get approval from us,” Trump said during the interview. “If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long. We want to make sure that we don’t have to deal with the same threats every ten years when you don’t have a president like me willing to take action.”

The comments highlight the tense relationship between Washington and Tehran, particularly as military conflict and political uncertainty continue to reshape the region.

Observers say Mojtaba Khamenei’s leadership could signal either continuity or escalation in Iran’s policies. Because of his close relationship with the IRGC and his role in his father’s inner circle, many analysts believe he may maintain the same hardline stance toward Western nations and regional rivals.

At the same time, the sudden death of Ali Khamenei and the rapid appointment of his son mark a historic turning point for the Islamic Republic. Leadership transitions in Iran are rare and often carry enormous consequences for the country’s domestic politics and its relationships with global powers.

As the region watches closely, Mojtaba Khamenei’s rise to power could shape the next chapter of Iran’s political future and its role in the ongoing Middle East conflict.
