Eberechi Eze delivered a decisive moment of brilliance off the bench to guide Arsenal FC into the quarterfinals of the FA Cup on Saturday, sealing a hard-fought 2–1 victory against Mansfield Town FC in a tense contest at Field Mill.

The Premier League leaders arrived as overwhelming favorites against a team competing in England’s third tier, yet the match proved far from straightforward. Mansfield produced an energetic and disciplined performance that forced Arsenal to fight until the final stages before securing their place in the last eight of the competition.

Eze ultimately proved the difference. Introduced from the bench midway through the second half, the attacking midfielder needed only a few minutes to make his mark. Collecting the ball outside the penalty area, he unleashed a powerful strike that soared into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and restoring Arsenal’s lead in dramatic fashion.

The victory keeps alive Arsenal’s hopes of achieving an extraordinary season across multiple competitions.

The club currently sits at the top of the Premier League standings, has advanced to the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League, and has already secured a place in the final of the EFL Cup. Progress in the FA Cup means the North London club remains on course to challenge for four trophies this season.

Despite the difference in league status between the teams, Mansfield delivered an impressive display that pushed the visitors to their limits. The home side, currently positioned in the lower half of the EFL League One table, matched Arsenal’s intensity and refused to be intimidated by their high-profile opponent.

Arsenal initially took control late in the first half through Noni Madueke. The winger opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a moment of technical excellence, striking a first-time curling shot that flew into the top corner and gave the visitors a 1–0 advantage heading into the break.

For a team battling near the bottom of League One, Mansfield showed remarkable resilience after conceding. Their persistence paid off shortly after the start of the second half when substitute Will Evans capitalized on a defensive mistake to bring the hosts level.

Five minutes into the second period, Evans intercepted a loose pass from Arsenal’s teenage defender Marli Salmon. Seizing the opportunity, he drove forward and fired a low shot beyond goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, sending the crowd inside Field Mill into celebration as Mansfield equalized.

The goal transformed the atmosphere in the stadium, energizing the home supporters and giving Mansfield renewed belief that an upset might be possible.

Evans later admitted that the moment carried personal significance for him after starting the game on the bench.

“I was gutted to not start,” Evans said after the match. “I felt that if I got any chance today I had to prove a point — not just to the team, but to myself as well.”

For several minutes after the equalizer, Mansfield continued to push forward, forcing Arsenal to defend carefully while searching for another breakthrough. The Premier League side struggled to regain full control of the game as the underdogs grew in confidence.

The turning point arrived in the 66th minute when Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta turned to his bench and introduced Eze in an effort to restore attacking momentum.

The substitution had an immediate impact. Just four minutes after stepping onto the pitch, Eze produced the decisive moment of the match. Receiving the ball in space outside the area, he unleashed a thunderous strike that curled into the top corner, silencing the home crowd and reestablishing Arsenal’s lead.

The goal ultimately proved to be the winner, although Mansfield continued to compete fiercely until the final whistle.

After the match, Arteta praised both teams, acknowledging that the game had lived up to the traditions of England’s oldest domestic cup competition.

“It was a proper FA Cup game,” Arteta said. “Credit to Mansfield, the stadium and the atmosphere their fans created. They made it difficult for us.”

The Arsenal manager also took a bold approach with his starting lineup by including two 16-year-old academy players — Salmon and Max Dowman — reflecting his willingness to give young talents opportunities during a demanding season across multiple competitions.

While the teenagers gained valuable experience, the match ultimately required the intervention of experienced players to secure the result.

For Mansfield, the narrow defeat still represented a performance that earned respect from supporters and neutrals alike. Manager Nigel Clough said his players had achieved their goal of making the contest competitive against one of the strongest teams in English football.

“We wanted to make it a proper cup tie and a tough game for Arsenal,” Clough said. “I thought we did that.”

The FA Cup fourth round continues later in the day with several high-profile fixtures, including Wrexham AFC hosting Chelsea FC, while defending champions Manchester City FC travel to face Newcastle United FC.

As for Arsenal, their victory at Field Mill keeps their remarkable season alive on multiple fronts, with supporters now daring to dream of an unprecedented sweep of silverware before the campaign concludes.
