The natural world is full of breathtaking surprises, and the 2026 World Nature Photography Awards beautifully capture these fleeting, magical moments. Photographers from 51 countries across six continents submitted thousands of entries, showcasing the remarkable diversity of life on Earth.

Taking home the prestigious title of World Nature Photographer of the Year is Australian photographer Jono Allen. His winning image, "Mãhina," features a rare white humpback whale calf gliding peacefully alongside its mother in the deep blue waters of Vava'u, Tonga. Reflecting on the experience, Allen shared, "Sharing this moment with Mãhina and her protective mother is a memory that will live with me forever". He further expressed that capturing this profound bond made a life-changing encounter "even more profound and humbling".

The awards also highlight quiet, tender interactions across the animal kingdom.

In the "Animal Portraits" category, American photographer Mary Schrader won gold for her photograph titled "Shared Wonder". Her heartwarming photo, taken in Bwindi, Uganda, captures a young female gorilla gazing curiously at a vibrant butterfly, perfectly illustrating a peaceful connection between two vastly different creatures.

Another standout is Vaidehi Chandrasekar from Singapore, who claimed gold in the "Behaviour – Mammals" category with "Water Ballet". Her stunning photograph shows a lone giraffe at a watering hole in Botswana's Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, the giraffe swishes its head, sending water droplets dancing through the air to form a "near-perfect circle before falling back to the earth".

These incredible photographs do more than just dazzle the eye; they inspire a deeper appreciation for conservation. As Adrian Dinsdale, co-founder of the competition, perfectly summarized: "This year's winning images are a powerful reminder of both the wonder of our planet and the importance of protecting it".
