Toronto Police marked their 2nd Annual Black History Month and this year’s theme was celebrating Black Resilience, recognizing the impact, service, and leadership of Black officers who continue to shape policing and community relations in one of the most diverse cities in the world.

During the event, two officers were recipients of the Terry James Trailblazer Award:

During the Black History Month Event on January 29 at Toronto Police Headquarters , Constable Gloria Bartley, the first Black policewoman hired by Toronto Police, received this year’s Terry James Trailblazer Award recipient.

Though Gloria is no longer with us, her legacy spoke loudly as her son accepted the award on her behalf. Legacy secured. 🕊️

The second Black History Month event took place on February 24th at the Jamaica Canadian Association. Ron Fanfair was the 2nd recipient of the Terry James Trailblazer Award.

A 16-year member of the Service, Ron is the author behind many of the stories you read about the organization and its people.
“Ron Fanfair is a fantastic photographer, journalist, writer, and storyteller,” colleagues say. His work has consistently brought the Service’s moments to life, capturing history through both powerful images and compelling storytelling.

Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the communities they serve is well deserving of this award.

The celebration also highlighted the legacy of Black officers within the Toronto Police Service and acknowledged the resilience, excellence, and contributions of Black Canadians both within and beyond law enforcement.

Black History Month is not only a time to reflect on the past, but also to recognize the present and future leadership of Black professionals who are making meaningful change in their fields.

This event brought together officers, community members, and leaders to celebrate progress, honour service, and reaffirm the importance of representation and resilience.
