Russia on Friday sharply criticized joint U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran, describing the operation as an “unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent UN member state,” according to a statement issued by Moscow’s Foreign Ministry.
In remarks distributed through official channels and referenced in an Associated Press report, Russia has condemned the strikes, accusing Washington and Jerusalem of using concerns over Iran’s nuclear program as a pretext for broader political objectives.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the United States and Israel were “hiding behind” claims related to Iran’s nuclear ambitions in order to pursue regime change. Moscow warned that continued military action could trigger a “humanitarian, economic and possibly radiological catastrophe” in the region and said the strikes were “plunging the Middle East into an abyss of uncontrolled escalation.”
Russian officials stated that bombing nuclear facilities is “unacceptable” and said Moscow stands ready to help broker a negotiated resolution to the conflict. The Kremlin maintains that the current escalation was initiated by the United States and Israel, not Iran.
Among the early reported targets of the operation were facilities linked to Iran’s leadership, including the residence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Five cities have been struck so far: Tehran, Karaj, Kermanshah, Qom and Isfahan.
President Donald Trump addressed the nation in an eight-minute speech following the strikes. He said Iran’s government must be held accountable for what he described as its historical attacks on the United States and its allies, as well as its continued pursuit of nuclear weapons capabilities.
Trump stated that U.S. forces would target Iran’s missile systems, naval assets and “terrorist proxies” operating throughout the region. He also called on the Iranian people to “take over your government” after the military operation concludes.
In response, Iranian forces have launched retaliatory actions against U.S. military installations and regional allies. Social media footage appeared to show smoke rising from a U.S. naval facility in Bahrain that serves as headquarters for the 5th Fleet. Additional attacks were reported in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Sirens sounded in Kuwait amid reports that two Iranian missiles were intercepted. Northern Israel also appeared to come under attack.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard confirmed that it had launched what it described as a “first wave” of drones and missiles targeting Israel.
Military and diplomatic developments are ongoing as governments across the region assess the impact of the escalating conflict.
