House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said Thursday that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick may be asked to testify as part of the committee’s ongoing investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and individuals connected to him.

Speaking ahead of a scheduled deposition of former first lady Hillary Clinton, Comer suggested that Lutnick’s name could surface during questioning as lawmakers continue reviewing the scope of the government’s handling of the Epstein case.

“That’s very possible and I think it’s a good possibility that his name will likely arise in questioning,” Comer said. “This isn’t just about Democrats. This is about anyone that has any knowledge of Epstein, the investigation — I think we all agree the government failed. The government failed the victims.”

Comer emphasized that the committee’s inquiry is not limited to one political party and would examine any individual believed to have relevant information about Epstein or the federal investigation into his activities.

Lutnick has drawn attention in recent weeks over past interactions with Epstein. He acknowledged visiting Epstein’s private island after Epstein pleaded guilty to sex trafficking of a minor. Lutnick had previously denied maintaining contact with Epstein after 2005 but later confirmed that he met with him in 2012.

“I did have lunch with him as I was on a boat going across on a family vacation,” Lutnick said regarding the later encounter.

The Oversight Committee’s probe continues to examine federal investigative actions, document handling, and individuals with knowledge of Epstein’s network, with additional depositions and potential witness requests expected in the coming weeks.
