Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a significant two-day visit to Israel on Wednesday, marking a major step in deepening ties between the two nations.
Both governments presented the trip as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the global fight against terrorism, while some international observers noted that the timing comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty over potential military developments involving Iran.
During the visit, Modi joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, where both leaders delivered speeches emphasizing their shared security challenges and the importance of standing united against extremist violence.
In his address, Modi expressed heartfelt sympathy for Israel following the devastating Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, which triggered the ongoing Gaza war and left deep scars across Israeli society.
“On behalf of the people of India, I convey our deepest condolences for every life lost and every family shattered in the barbaric terrorist attack,” Modi said. “We feel your pain, and we share your grief. India stands firmly with Israel, with full conviction, in this difficult time and beyond.”
Modi stressed that India, like Israel, has faced its own painful experiences with terrorism. He referenced recent attacks in India, including a deadly incident in Kashmir in April 2025, when gunmen killed 26 people, sparking national outrage and raising fears of wider conflict.
“Like Israel, India has adopted a consistent and uncompromising policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism,” Modi told lawmakers. “There can be no double standards. Combating terrorism requires sustained, coordinated global action, and India supports all efforts that promote peace, stability, and security.”
Beyond security cooperation, Modi highlighted the broader partnership between the two countries, describing India and Israel as “ancient civilizations” connected by shared values, innovation, and resilience.
He praised Israel’s achievements in science and technology, calling the country a global leader in innovation, and expressed enthusiasm about expanding cooperation in areas such as research, trade, agriculture, and defense.
Modi also noted the growing cultural ties between the nations, pointing to the increasing popularity of Indian traditions like yoga and ayurveda in Israel.
“I am delighted to see yoga and holistic wellness practices embraced by the people of Israel,” he said. “I invite more young Israelis to visit India and experience the vibrancy of our society and the benefits of our ancient traditions.”
Netanyahu warmly welcomed Modi, describing him as one of Israel’s closest allies and an influential global leader.
“You are a great friend of Israel and a great leader on the world stage,” Netanyahu said. “Our friendship has flourished in recent years. We have doubled our trade, strengthened our cooperation, and built a partnership that benefits both our nations.”
He added that the relationship between India and Israel is rooted in shared democratic values and mutual respect.
“We are two strong democracies,” Netanyahu said. “Israel is stronger than ever, and India is stronger than ever. Together, our alliance is an enormous force for progress and stability.”
Modi’s visit was historic in several respects. He became the first Indian prime minister ever to address the Knesset, a milestone reflecting the growing closeness between the two countries. Following his speech, he was awarded the Speaker of the Knesset Medal, one of the highest honors granted by Israel’s parliament.
However, the visit also unfolded against the backdrop of internal political tensions within Israel. Some opposition lawmakers staged a partial boycott during Netanyahu’s remarks, protesting a separate controversy involving the country’s Supreme Court leadership. Despite the protest, opposition leaders returned to hear Modi speak, underscoring the broad respect he commands across Israel’s political spectrum.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid personally praised Modi during the visit, highlighting his support for Israel during difficult times.
“The entire State of Israel admires your leadership and values your friendship,” Lapid said. “We appreciate the fact that you stood with Israel during moments of crisis and helped strengthen the bond between our nations.”
Modi’s visit has also drawn global attention because of its timing, as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East. With the United States increasing its military presence in the region and Iran issuing warnings of possible retaliation, analysts have suggested that major geopolitical decisions may be temporarily paused until the high-profile diplomatic visit concludes.
While no official link has been confirmed, the visit underscores India’s growing influence on the world stage and its role as a key diplomatic partner for multiple countries.
Overall, Modi’s trip represents a powerful symbol of deepening cooperation between India and Israel, reinforcing their shared commitment to security, innovation, and mutual support in an increasingly complex and uncertain global environment.
