Amazon is reportedly considering an investment of up to $50 billion in OpenAI, with a significant portion of the funding contingent on the AI firm either going public or achieving a major artificial general intelligence milestone, according to a report citing people familiar with the matter.

Under terms that are still being negotiated, Amazon would commit $15 billion upfront. An additional $35 billion would be tied to performance-related triggers, including OpenAI reaching a defined AGI benchmark or pursuing an initial public offering. The structure of the deal suggests Amazon is seeking both strategic alignment and downside protection as competition intensifies in the artificial intelligence sector.

The reported funding round also includes major commitments from other global players. SoftBank Group and Nvidia are each said to be planning $30 billion investments, to be delivered in three installments over the course of the year. Meanwhile, Microsoft remains a key backer of OpenAI and has already invested heavily in the company through strategic partnerships and cloud infrastructure agreements.

OpenAI is laying the groundwork for a potential IPO that could value the company at as much as $1 trillion, according to earlier reports. Such a valuation would rank it among the most valuable technology firms globally and underscore the extraordinary investor appetite for companies at the forefront of generative AI and advanced machine learning.

The race to deepen ties with OpenAI reflects broader strategic positioning across the tech industry. Major cloud providers and semiconductor manufacturers are seeking to lock in long-term relationships with AI developers that are rapidly expanding their data center footprints. OpenAI, in particular, has been ramping up spending on computing infrastructure to support large-scale AI model training and deployment, a move that requires substantial capital.

For Amazon, an investment of this scale would represent a decisive escalation in its AI strategy and could position it as the largest contributor to OpenAI’s ongoing fundraising round. The company has been in discussions to invest tens of billions of dollars, and sources previously indicated that the total commitment could reach $50 billion.

If finalized, the deal would mark one of the largest private investments ever made in an artificial intelligence company. It would also further solidify the concentration of financial and technological power among a handful of global firms competing to define the next era of AI development.
